Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself. ~ Rumi
What is Mindfulness? Mindfulness is having all your attention focused on what's happening right now, in this moment. It's about being engaged in what you are doing without judging it or pushing it away. It's a close encounter with reality!
You can practice mindfulness anytime, with any activity, simply by giving your full attention to what you are doing while you are doing it.
What is Mindfulness Training?
Mindfulness is a skill that can be developed. One of the primary ways we train mindfulness is through mindfulness meditation. When you hear the word meditation, all that means is that you are setting aside a specific time period to do mindfulness training, just as you would set aside time to do strength training or range practice.
Mindfulness meditation had been scientifically proven to settle the nervous system and train the brain to be more focused, engaged and less emotionally reactive. It is a simple and powerful pathway to health, resilience, stress mitigation and optimal performance.
What's the Big Deal About Being Mindful?
Life does not take place in the past or in the future; it is happening right now. Your thoughts, feelings and sensations can only be experienced in the present moment. The present moment, aka "now", is the only time you can take in new information, respond to a threat, change a course of action, or see that sunset. It's when we are at our best - in our jobs and in life.
However, much of the time we are not in the present moment. Instead, we are either worrying about the future or ruminating about the past, often activating out stress response. And we miss a lot. Being in the present moment makes us safer and happier.
What's in it for You? Meditation produces a very deep state of physical rest providing your body an opportunity to release stress and reset your nervous system. Regular meditation has been shown to:
Create positive structural and functional changes in the brain
